Not long after the murder of three of Jennifer Hudson’s family members Chicago’s Mayor Richard Daley said "When you have someone with access to a gun it shows you what they will do.”
No Mr. Mayor your statement is blatantly inaccurate! There are tens of thousands of gun owners in the state of Illinois who own, possess and use guns everyday without committing crimes. What you probably should have said is “When you have someone with no regard to following the law, with access to an illegal gun it shows you what they will do.” That makes more sense. One could even make the case that this incident is the quintessential example of why gun laws do not work! One could also point out that if the family had ready access to a firearm Julian King may still be alive!
Update 10/25/08 The new murder stats have come out in Chicago over the past few days. 292 murders is an older number than I thought. There have been 426 murders in Chicago so far this year, making it more deadly than Fallujah!!
By: Howie, Producer of Chandler’s Watch Radio Show www.chandlerswatch.com To date in the City of Chicago, where I remind you there are no major combat operations ongoing, I have seen reported that there have been 292 426 murders; as opposed to the 276 deaths that have been reported in Iraq, where combat operations continue. What does this say about the city, the citizens of the city, or the cities government? Personally I think that it speaks volumes. It speaks volumes in more ways than just numbers.
Now not all of the deaths in Iraq have occurred because of combat. All American Service members that have died in Iraq, regardless of what actually killed them are included in this stat. So my comparison may not be very fair because if a Marine dies in a traffic accident while in Iraq his or her death is included in the 276 deaths. I am only using the Chicago statistics for those that have been murdered in 2008. No traffic accidents, no DUI’s, no police shootings, only murders.
Yes, I have misspelled the political slogan above; yes I even did it intentionally. It is one of the many slogans that have been used by the Obama campaign, wrongly I believe.
I am writing this letter because of my great concern for our Republican Party. I have been a public servant for over twenty five years. I am a Navy Veteran, and currently a Coast Guard Reservist and an active Police Officer. I am proud to have served under you, your father and President Reagan. That inclusive combination is why I am a very conservative Republican.
I am currently running for City Council in the seventh district in San Diego, California. About a year ago, as a courtesy, I approached the local Republican Party representatives regarding my intentions to run. The Chairman of the Republican Party in San Diego County, Tony Krvaric, opined that I should step aside or choose from other elected offices available, ranging from dog catcher to President. Mr. Krvaric stated that the party has endorsed a woman who has paid her dues. He also stated that she had been an accountant for the party and she is now owed the position. He later mentioned that we should be choosing the best person for the position. I regard this as an insult since he has closed his mind and refuses to discuss the matter further.
As a Veteran I swore an oath and offered my life if needed, for the democratic principles upon which this great country was founded. Silencing a Veteran’s voice should, and I’m sure does resonate in every serviceman’s ears, including those of our forefather’s; the historic heroes who rang that very bell of freedom for all such sacrifice.
It appears that the Republican Party no longer stands as the voice of the people. We no longer seem to build on the traditional foundation that our Veterans have so gallantly defended over the years, that simply states that “no government shall be greater than the people it represents”. President Reagan declared that “the government’s first priority is to protect the citizens, not run their lives”.
We as Veterans are losing our voice in government. The party leadership are dishonoring, disheartening and discouraging the very people who have proven their devotion to this great nation, and promoting only those anointed by them.
As the Commander in Chief and the head of our Party, I respectfully request to meet with you on this very critical issue of (bringing our Republic ideals and values back into our Party). We must form alliances and not agendas and any Veteran who is willing to run for Office should have our Party’s unconditional support. We are living in an extremely consequential time for our country and our Party. I, like many at this time, am having reservations of remaining with a Republican Party that disrespects the rank and file of our membership faithful.
I respectfully anticipate your response and remain;
I find myself amazed that once again after some nut job commits acts of violence it is not society that needs to be improved, but the restrictions on law abiding citizens that must be increased.
